Ancients of Ooga is a breezy puzzle platformer that will appeal to younger gamers and fans of the 16-bit classic The Lost Vikings. A primitive tribe of Gremlin-like creatures called Ooganis ignored the advice of their chiefs and befriended a group of monsters called the Boolis. Once they gained the Ooganis' trust the Boolis killed off the chiefs and enslaved the tribe. You, the Great Spirit of Ooga, have been summoned to set the Ooganis free. You'll be travelling to each village, possessing the Ooganis (you're merely a spirit, after all), and recruiting members for your revolt.

The ability to possess different characters is the primary game mechanic here as well as what relates Ancients of Ooga to The Lost Vikings. A typical example is using one Oogani to step on a switch that opens a door, and then possessing another to walk through and gain access to a new area. The different types of Oogani have unique abilities such as the power to spit fireballs or swim quickly.

Another activity you'll be doing a lot of is putting things in your mouth. Ooganis have very strong stomachs and can swallow almost anything. It's a pretty handy way of carrying items around. Many of the puzzles require you to bring several items to one location, but you can't use ladders while holding something in your hand. You can stuff a couple objects (even Ooganis) in your mouth and puke them up when you arrive at your destination, though.

Ancients of Ooga has a playful sense of humor and the Oogani have some funny animations, but it's toilet humor that will probably be most appreciated by younger gamers that think flatulence and burps are hilarious. Note that there is a lot of reading, though.

You won't break a sweat reuniting the tribes, but Ancients of Ooga remains entertaining despite its lack of difficulty. By holding the left trigger you can see a map of the current level and your objectives are clearly noted by red arrows. You always know where you need to go, but figuring out how to get there may require a little thinking. Each village requires you to perform similar tasks so Ancients can be repetitive, but it never lost my interest. I suppose it comes down to whether or not you enjoy the basic possession and eating mechanics, and I do.

This is a long game, and one that will definitely give you your $10 worth. Each village is made up of several levels, everything you do in the game boosts your score on the leaderboards, and a friend can join the fun for local co-op. There are hidden items to find and bonus challenges for the adventurous.

There are some strange design choices that keep Ancients of Ooga from excelling. You can move back and forth in the game world but this ability doesn't seem to have any useful purpose. Instead, it means picking up items isn't always as easy as it should be. Simple left and right movement would have been easier to manage
